CHAPTER ELEVEN

LOOKING BACK, ANDY would have been willing to bet money that she had seen the last of Mr. Logan MacArthur, at least until the sun became more than just a myth and dried up the residual flooding. Until after Stevi’s wedding, anyway—especially since it was tomorrow.

She would have been wrong.

Approximately forty-five minutes after he made his exit, a far from happy Logan MacArthur returned to the inn.

Andy had just finished decorating the common room for the next day’s festivities and was about to call Silvio to tell him that he could have his ladder back when she plowed into Logan as she was leaving the room.

She could feel her heart thud against her rib cage.

“You’re back,” she said in disbelief as she automatically covered her heart with her hand. The next moment, Andy regrouped. “If you’ve come back to get a second crack at tipping me over, I’m afraid you’re too late. I’ve finished putting up the decorations and I’m too busy to listen to whatever new angle you’ve come up with to make stealing the inn look like less than a crime. My sister’s getting married tomorrow and I’ve still got a lot of things left to do so forgive me for being rude but go away!” she ordered, shouting the two words at him.

“Believe me, I’d like nothing better,” Logan told her, frustration etching itself into his features.

“So what’s stopping you?” It wasn’t as if she, or anyone else at the inn, was trying to detain him. Quite the opposite.

“Those roads I’ve told you about? The ones I need in order to leave? Well, they’ve washed out.”

This was the first she’d heard about that. She’d been too busy working to listen to the news. She hoped this wouldn’t stop some of the wedding guests from coming.

She knew that wouldn’t have stopped her if she wanted to get away from someone. “Find different roads,” she told Logan in a no-nonsense voice.

“There aren’t any,” he said evenly, carefully enunciating each word. “The freeway is inaccessible. It seems that right now Ladera, for all intents and purposes, has become an island. Nobody can come in, nobody can go out,” he explained, using hand gestures to further illustrate his point.

Andy’s eyes never left his face. “I don’t believe you.”

It was on the tip of his tongue to ask her what she thought he had to gain by lying, but Logan was certain that her answer would only make him angry. Or angrier, because he was already angry.

He let it slide.

“I’d tell you to go see for yourself, but the weather bureau is issuing flash flood warnings for the area, and if you try driving toward the freeway you just might wind up floating out to sea.” He’d had a hard time turning the vehicle around, fighting the rain for control of his car. Navigation had been nothing short of a challenge.

“And you came back here because?” Andy drew out the last word.

As she continued watching him, she could see that the man was struggling with what he had to say.
